I should&#8217;ve said wait until <strong>I<\/strong> hear his crime album.<sup data-fn=\"96a1963a-1730-4a44-9c32-c586c38eaadc\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#96a1963a-1730-4a44-9c32-c586c38eaadc\" id=\"96a1963a-1730-4a44-9c32-c586c38eaadc-link\">1<\/a><\/sup> Of course I knew he had enough songs for another. Before the end of the year was never out of the question. The twist: five of these twelve tunes didn&#8217;t exist a scant three months ago.<sup data-fn=\"dc0fc835-73c1-44de-a182-f99f802c9f5b\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#dc0fc835-73c1-44de-a182-f99f802c9f5b\" id=\"dc0fc835-73c1-44de-a182-f99f802c9f5b-link\">2<\/a><\/sup> Previously I claimed &#8220;legit good&#8221; was an understatement when it came to Hunter&#8217;s songcraft. &#8220;Prolific&#8221; is up there too.<sup data-fn=\"b22a5e60-ba11-428f-b605-bd3666227bce\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#b22a5e60-ba11-428f-b605-bd3666227bce\" id=\"b22a5e60-ba11-428f-b605-bd3666227bce-link\">3<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-spotify wp-block-embed-spotify wp-embed-aspect-21-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"Spotify Embed: Secrets &amp; Graves\" style=\"border-radius: 12px\" width=\"100%\" height=\"352\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen allow=\"autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; fullscreen; picture-in-picture\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/embed\/album\/5iCDdz0KnfmXY9e5oKh9j8?si=332A_ifXT3Wwjj_cCE94Jg&amp;utm_source=oembed\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Over the years I observed songs from the HCU<sup data-fn=\"7e561d89-1284-44cb-8195-ced811776aed\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#7e561d89-1284-44cb-8195-ced811776aed\" id=\"7e561d89-1284-44cb-8195-ced811776aed-link\">4<\/a><\/sup> tend to alternate between being family\/relationship driven or dark crime ditties\u2014occasionally dipping a toe into each pool simultaneously to great effect.<sup data-fn=\"986e97e3-c89b-4ad9-a2a0-57f9f14f808b\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#986e97e3-c89b-4ad9-a2a0-57f9f14f808b\" id=\"986e97e3-c89b-4ad9-a2a0-57f9f14f808b-link\">5<\/a><\/sup> Hunter calls this batch his Southern Gothic crime album, which nails it and would&#8217;ve been a decent title.<sup data-fn=\"9803d49a-8309-4ba9-8f05-031d5237153c\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#9803d49a-8309-4ba9-8f05-031d5237153c\" id=\"9803d49a-8309-4ba9-8f05-031d5237153c-link\">6<\/a><\/sup> A fugitive on the lam reflects on where he is and how he got there across a dozen dark, sad songs set in different places. There&#8217;s a lot of running, hiding, familial heartache, at least one actual crime, and some impressively funky underlying grooves paying tribute to the artist&#8217;s inspirational southern rock roots.<sup data-fn=\"c241d242-3a58-4569-b650-aba47265fc78\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#c241d242-3a58-4569-b650-aba47265fc78\" id=\"c241d242-3a58-4569-b650-aba47265fc78-link\">7<\/a><\/sup> The line between a criminal and someone just trying to get by is a fuzzy one. Or as what might be my favorite Hunter James lyric of all time tells it: <em>&#8220;There&#8217;s good and bad, right and wrong. Then there&#8217;s me&#8230;&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Back when I wrote about the first record that scant three months ago, I said seeing songs I&#8217;ve known for years out in the world made me happy. That&#8217;s another understatement. &#8220;GBI&#8221; &amp; &#8220;Clean&#8221; &amp; &#8220;Cadillac Ford&#8221; &amp; &#8220;Meet Again&#8221; have been dark, dark favorites of mine for a long, long time. Here they found a home (wherever that might be&#8230;) amongst some newer, equally great kindred favorites like &#8220;Running in the Daylight&#8221; &amp; &#8220;Mystic&#8221;<sup data-fn=\"17aee052-1f83-4087-9d5c-e38f36462950\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#17aee052-1f83-4087-9d5c-e38f36462950\" id=\"17aee052-1f83-4087-9d5c-e38f36462950-link\">8<\/a><\/sup> &amp; &#8220;Change My Mind&#8221; in the HCU to form this criminally cohesive collection. Does he have a trifecta in him before the end of 2026?
