The donut story was too short to charge a buck for, and linked enough to the locksmith\u2019s tale it felt like a good representation of how the DC tales share a universe. I likened it to a cartoon shown before a film sometimes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the full novel version of <em>Duty Calls<\/em> I\u2019ve always envisioned Doug\u2019s flashback near the start and Justin\u2019s closer to the end, making for decent truncated bookends here.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Holes <\/strong>(<strong><em>Donut Tidbits)<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>I\u2019d called this story \u201cDoug\u2019N Donuts\u201d for years, but feedback it spoiled the reveal of the donut shop name plus not liking the idea of <strong><em>Donuts: Doug\u2019N Donuts<\/em><\/strong> as the section title made me swap it.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cDoug Zhang Seizes Opportunity\u201d is admittedly a little lame, but pairs well with the other title we\u2019ll address down below.<sup data-fn=\"e0bd82c9-37dc-46ab-8606-314689c40b6f\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#e0bd82c9-37dc-46ab-8606-314689c40b6f\" id=\"e0bd82c9-37dc-46ab-8606-314689c40b6f-link\">1<\/a><\/sup><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Doug\u2019s son Bobby Zhang is Shawn Smith\u2019s road-trip companion in \u201cFester\u201d and the apprentice to HJ the handyman in \u201cCopper on Parchment\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Nut\u2019n Healthy<\/em> as a donut name still amuses me now as much as it did when I wrote the line 15 years ago. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Authors &amp; actors hanging out at Doug\u2019N includes screenwriter Allan Smithee who does just that in \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/books2read.com\/b\/debaser\">Debaser<\/a>\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>There\u2019s a dentist in the <em>Duty Calls<\/em> jury pool; her story is unreleased \/ unnamed as I write this commentary post but she is the reason dentists come up twice.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cHole tone mechanism collapse\u201d must\u2019ve meant something when I wrote it but I can\u2019t recall what. Maybe just vaguely time travel-y?<sup data-fn=\"0f8dae65-478a-47ce-9a24-df3cd7437eba\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#0f8dae65-478a-47ce-9a24-df3cd7437eba\" id=\"0f8dae65-478a-47ce-9a24-df3cd7437eba-link\">2<\/a><\/sup><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cAnother round from Uncle Doug!\u201d paraphrases an anecdote from one of my college professors. We were learning how to loop ambient background audio when editing to mask cuts and he told a cautionary tale of not noticing someone yelling \u201canother round for uncle _____\u201d in their room tone until after they finalized their documentary. Nate Pepper &amp; I still randomly quote that line to each other.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Doug\u2019s assistant describing a break-in starts the segue to the next story, though maybe not in the way you think. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>I\u2019m mildly obsessed with mixing cold brew coffee &amp; lemonade\u2014aka a Swedish version of an Arnold Palmer (<strong class=\"Yjhzub\"><em><a href=\"https:\/\/sprudge.com\/this-iced-coffee-lemonade-from-sweden-is-really-really-good-80931.html\">Kaffelemonad<\/a><\/em>)<\/strong> or an Algerian <strong class=\"Yjhzub\"><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.seriouseats.com\/mazagran-coffee-iced-coffee-lemonade-8647476\">Mazagran<\/a><\/em><\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Doug gets his jury duty summons here, pushing him into the broader story. Early on all the <em>Duty Calls<\/em> flashbacks had this (like how many season 1 <em>LOST<\/em> flashbacks were about how everyone got to Australia), though I eventually abandoned this in favor of more variety. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Donution \u2014 lol<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Doug imagining a waaaa-woooo siren sound segues us directly into the Deadbolt b-side\u2026<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Keys (<em>Deadbolt tidbits)<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/books2read.com\/b\/sentpackin\">Sent Packin\u2019<\/a>\u201d also starts with onomatopoeia, as does the second act of \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/books2read.com\/b\/cop\">Copper on Parchment.<\/a>\u201d \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/books2read.com\/b\/fester\">Fester<\/a>\u201d opens with a ringing phone, and Doug\u2019s story could have an unheard alarm clock kicking things off.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The waiter (and the restaurant) will appear in another DC story. ROME isn\u2019t his name, but is part of his name. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The finale of a certain tv show debuted shortly before I published this twofer, making \u201c\u2026but Justin had seen stranger things\u201d a hilarious accidental reference since the program didn\u2019t exist at all when the line was written.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cDeadbolted door\u201d was shoehorned into the story at the last minute when I liked \u201cDonuts &amp; Deadbolts\u201d better than \u201cDonuts &amp; Locks\u201d as an overarching title. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The locksmith story has been &#8220;on deck&#8221; as the next Duty Calls release for years, but something about it never felt quite right or ready. Finally figured out it related to Justin&#8217;s unnamed partner. Flipping their gender to show Justin&#8217;s indecision impacting his personal life was the missing link.<sup data-fn=\"dc4f8d42-b1cb-4abc-a38f-a3a36c412931\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#dc4f8d42-b1cb-4abc-a38f-a3a36c412931\" id=\"dc4f8d42-b1cb-4abc-a38f-a3a36c412931-link\">3<\/a><\/sup><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The short story &#8220;Bored to Death&#8221; from an <a href=\"https:\/\/store.mcsweeneys.net\/products\/mcsweeneys-issue-24\">old issue of McSweeney&#8217;s<\/a> influenced Justin&#8217;s character and the general storyline here. I liked the idea of a writer in over his head as a detective, which made me explore a locksmith in over his head as an inadvertent part of a heist gone wrong. This predated that story becoming a <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bored_to_Death\">tv series<\/a>, so I guess I know how to pick &#8217;em?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The first draft predated smartphones, so I decided to keep Justin&#8217;s old flip phone partly out of nostalgia and party because I thought modernizing it would be boring.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Originally I used lock and key emojis as the section breaks, but since Kindle didn&#8217;t support them subbed in the special character as a proxy for a lock picking tool.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Calling the locksmith company SMITHLOCK<sup data-fn=\"2533b2e1-9e32-42f3-8038-675fdfc49aaa\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#2533b2e1-9e32-42f3-8038-675fdfc49aaa\" id=\"2533b2e1-9e32-42f3-8038-675fdfc49aaa-link\">4<\/a><\/sup> of course amuses me to no end. Referring to it as containing &#8220;both of their names&#8221; was a new twist since Justin&#8217;s last name isn&#8217;t mentioned in the story.
