You need to tie up as many dangling threads as possible, leave the reader satisfied that reading the book was worthwhile, and try to go out on a memorable high note without it feeling abrupt or forced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Traditional (but still accurate) opening aside, this ending was extra tough since it isn&#8217;t necessarily the end end. <em><a href=\"https:\/\/books2read.com\/b\/lbdg\">Local Boy Done Gone<\/a><\/em> was supposed to be half of a two volume, read in any order sequel<sup data-fn=\"a352f643-b0cd-475f-8060-51bb5527fb19\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#a352f643-b0cd-475f-8060-51bb5527fb19\" id=\"a352f643-b0cd-475f-8060-51bb5527fb19-link\">1<\/a><\/sup>. The other half is called <em>Nelsonification<\/em> and follows Local Boy&#8217;s son, Nelson, the old man, and the redhead on adjacent adventures inside the same timeline(s). The simultaneous release got scrapped when life got in the way, but the goal here was to still wrap up one standalone story while setting up another AND playing it in such a way I&#8217;d know it was the midpoint for some readers and the end for others. TL;DR: Tall order for a last but not last chapter!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The chapter itself is a redux of <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.timelypersuasion.com\/blog\/lbdg-commentary-32-and-then-i-wrote-a-song\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"3483\">chapter 32<\/a> with an older\/wiser Local Boy taking the reins and pushing the previous daughter saving resolution further to give 27 musicians a happier ending. How? Via &#8220;Won One&#8221; \u2014 the most important song in all timelines.<sup data-fn=\"2b3e9baf-3452-4522-a3e5-26f5bd1768f6\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#2b3e9baf-3452-4522-a3e5-26f5bd1768f6\" id=\"2b3e9baf-3452-4522-a3e5-26f5bd1768f6-link\">2<\/a><\/sup> By &#8220;putting won and one&#8221; together (get it?<sup data-fn=\"535a7f6f-4d6c-4bf9-85b6-8f116f4376bb\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#535a7f6f-4d6c-4bf9-85b6-8f116f4376bb\" id=\"535a7f6f-4d6c-4bf9-85b6-8f116f4376bb-link\">3<\/a><\/sup>) a good timeline is had by all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Tidbits:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The lyrics to the little Sch\u00f6dinger ditty are slightly different \/ arguably better than they were previously, showing Local Boy&#8217;s growth as a songwriter.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Telling his younger self he shouldn&#8217;t know too much about his own future shows Local Boy is starting to become the old man\u2014though we still haven&#8217;t definitively determined if the old man is his older self or his son&#8217;s older self&#8230;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>&#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=yoWHNDgGtbg\">Becoming someone else is&#8230;<\/a>&#8220;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The lists of hair\/skin\/eyes represent the 27 club members from the redhead&#8217;s list. (The eyes were the most fun \/ referential.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<iframe style=\"border: 0; width: 100%; height: 120px;\" the back of the van at the end for <em>Nelsonification<\/em> purposes. Thankfully I&#8217;d introduced a leaping-type concept earlier, allowing me to casually pull the <em>Timely Persuasion<\/em> narrator into the van like it&#8217;s no big deal<sup data-fn=\"1678e1ef-a64c-434a-9bb1-6089974c07b4\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#1678e1ef-a64c-434a-9bb1-6089974c07b4\" id=\"1678e1ef-a64c-434a-9bb1-6089974c07b4-link\">4<\/a><\/sup>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>&#8220;Jukebotic communication devices&#8221; is a tiny nod to Benji Hughes and <em>LILILIL.<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The actual most covered song of all time is &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/faroutmagazine.co.uk\/the-10-most-covered-songs-in-history\/\">Yesterday<\/a>&#8221; by The Beatles. Having &#8220;Won One&#8221; take over that title\u2014and be announced on the Coverville podcast by the world&#8217;s foremost authority on cover songs Brian Ibbott\u2014was a fun little easter egg setting up a bigger role for a certain archivist in <em>Nelsonification.<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>I couldn&#8217;t end the book without saying <em>dangerous folk rock appeal<\/em> one last time.<sup data-fn=\"8826b1da-27f6-4bd5-a0f6-4b0bc574fe9f\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#8826b1da-27f6-4bd5-a0f6-4b0bc574fe9f\" id=\"8826b1da-27f6-4bd5-a0f6-4b0bc574fe9f-link\">5<\/a><\/sup><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Timely Persuasion<\/em> starts at a bowling alley. The narrator sees a tan van drive away shortly after he gains the ability to time travel. The redhead asks if anyone wants to go bowling before settling into the driver&#8217;s seat. Wonder where<sup data-fn=\"a52d50d0-81f2-4d83-b487-79dc9192412b\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#a52d50d0-81f2-4d83-b487-79dc9192412b\" id=\"a52d50d0-81f2-4d83-b487-79dc9192412b-link\">6<\/a><\/sup> she&#8217;s taking everyone&#8230;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The final line of <em>Timely Persuasion<\/em> is &#8220;And maybe somebody was.&#8221; Finding a way to land on a similar (and rhyming!) line here really excited me.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It wasn&#8217;t until a few months after the book was release I realized how much the ending parallels <em><a href=\"https:\/\/books2read.com\/b\/LX\">L Extreme<\/a><\/em> with the (spoiler alert) &#8220;play a bunch of songs to save the day&#8221; resolution.
