I named this chapter after a song by the Supersuckers yet to be released at both the time of publication and the timestamp of this blog post.<sup data-fn=\"90a3e2ed-8ae6-4331-b1c0-d4da184654f2\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#90a3e2ed-8ae6-4331-b1c0-d4da184654f2\" id=\"90a3e2ed-8ae6-4331-b1c0-d4da184654f2-link\">1<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Anachronism or not, it&#8217;s a pretty succinct summary of what&#8217;s about to happen \/ where this story was inevitably heading. If the inspiration for <em>Local Boy Done Gone<\/em> was imagining &#8220;Won One&#8221; as the most important song of all time I had to deliver on that promise. The epigraph playfully calls it a traditional folk song of unknown origins (actually written by my college roommate Chris Evjy in the mid-1990s) though it&#8217;s followed Local Boy across two books. A tan van was also connected to that hospital.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>&#8220;She draped a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-features\/unplugged-nirvana-cobain-sweater-900672\/\">pea-green cardigan sweater<\/a> over my white dress shirt&#8230;&#8221;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>I still giggle at the &#8220;speaking of minor hits&#8221; segue.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>My friend Neil invests in real estate, <a href=\"https:\/\/nomadcapital.us\">specifically self storage<\/a>. His gig indirectly inspired the setting of this climactic chapter.<sup data-fn=\"1a73c5ac-6984-41b1-ac62-41157e977da6\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#1a73c5ac-6984-41b1-ac62-41157e977da6\" id=\"1a73c5ac-6984-41b1-ac62-41157e977da6-link\">2<\/a><\/sup><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>&#8220;This might&#8217;ve been the most beautiful version of &#8216;Won One&#8217; I&#8217;d ever played&#8221; references a <a href=\"https:\/\/beatsperminute.com\/jens\/\">Jens Lekman performance at the Masonic Lodge in Hollywood on 9\/28\/11<\/a>. He performed what I thought was the most beautiful version of &#8220;Black Cab&#8221; I&#8217;d ever heard, and no sooner had I thought it than <a href=\"https:\/\/lbdg.tumblr.com\/post\/10838882908\/that-was-probably-the-most-beautiful-version-of\">he said the same thing aloud<\/a>.<sup data-fn=\"4aa26c67-a424-4540-9f5a-c63e557c5590\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#4aa26c67-a424-4540-9f5a-c63e557c5590\" id=\"4aa26c67-a424-4540-9f5a-c63e557c5590-link\">3<\/a><\/sup><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Hazy as my actual memory may be these days, the scene here is more or less a play by play of the first time I heard &#8220;Won One&#8221; in real life including my pitch on what to title it. (The working title was &#8220;Turn Up The Rain&#8221; \u2014 later changed to &#8220;Turnip&#8221; at my dumb suggestion before eventually landing on far better wordplay in my final suggestion.)<sup data-fn=\"d128727b-b178-40c3-8820-9927fd90ab30\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#d128727b-b178-40c3-8820-9927fd90ab30\" id=\"d128727b-b178-40c3-8820-9927fd90ab30-link\">4<\/a><\/sup><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>When I finally tracked down an old recording of &#8220;Won One&#8221; years later, I couldn&#8217;t make out if the lyric was head\/hand\/hair. I think the ambiguity is a big part of the charm.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Speaking of ambiguity: While <em>Timely Persuasion<\/em> is sometimes described as being overly explainy, <em>Local Boy Done Gone<\/em> skews towards intentionally unexplainy. The redhead continues to hand wave when confronted, but consistently sticks to her story of &#8220;updating memories&#8221; even as the rest of our understanding evolves. Here the Schrodinger&#8217;s cat metaphors help her have it both ways, updating two distinct memories simultaneously without creating a paradox.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sistine gets crossed off the list by being present for the <em>writing<\/em> of &#8220;Won One&#8221; at an appropriate age to be inspired by it.
