{"id":3369,"date":"2025-01-14T22:55:04","date_gmt":"2025-01-15T04:55:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.timelypersuasion.com\/blog\/?p=3369"},"modified":"2025-01-14T22:55:04","modified_gmt":"2025-01-15T04:55:04","slug":"lbdg-commentary-24-hoverin","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.timelypersuasion.com\/blog\/lbdg-commentary-24-hoverin\/","title":{"rendered":"LBDG Commentary 24: Hoverin&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>This change of pace chapter switches up the time travel dynamic\u2014or does it?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>More overtly <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.quantumleap-alsplace.com\/index.html\">Quantum Leap<\/a><\/em> inspired than what we&#8217;ve read so far, Local Boy occupies the body of his future self while the redhead takes over a future version of his wife. He lives the original history described in <em>Timely Persuasion<\/em> from a different point of view. Actually a slightly altered history, since his time traveling son is also present as a ghostly, <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=xj3jMpxjUfo\">hoverin&#8217;<\/a><\/em> (thank you, Kim Deal!) presence that adds some <em>Back to the Future II <\/em>vibes on top of QL. Talk about putting right what once went wrong!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>How can a magical mystery machine of a van driving through sparkly fog and taking control of another body in another time be part of the same time travel dynamic? I&#8217;m not going to answer that here aside from saying there&#8217;s a method to my madness and it&#8217;s not all that different than how TP introduced a related differentiation between &#8220;in head&#8221; vs. &#8220;full ghostly body&#8221; time travel. Techniques evolve, and the redhead is from far enough forward she&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=bgLI2OkECmc\">ahead of the curve<\/a>\u2014especially when she&#8217;s going rogue&#8230;<sup data-fn=\"0e8186c8-3227-440e-bc95-fa3c7525db28\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#0e8186c8-3227-440e-bc95-fa3c7525db28\" id=\"0e8186c8-3227-440e-bc95-fa3c7525db28-link\">1<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Aside from the time travel tale tributes and teases of the redhead&#8217;s skills, this chapter also serves as a &#8220;show, don&#8217;t tell&#8221; way of letting Local Boy know his kids turn out ok while giving him something different to worry about when he returns back to the past of his present. I also tried to<sup data-fn=\"8564710f-a8e3-4e8c-9821-e54b293f716f\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#8564710f-a8e3-4e8c-9821-e54b293f716f\" id=\"8564710f-a8e3-4e8c-9821-e54b293f716f-link\">2<\/a><\/sup> give the reader some reminders of what to keep front of mind as the story progresses. (&#8220;<em>The old man said I married the wrong girl&#8230;&#8221; &#8220;Are you my wife or not?&#8221;<\/em> &#8220;<em>How can I participate in a memory of something I have no memory of?&#8221;)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Tidbits:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Before landing on the apostrophe theme for this section of the book, the working chapter title was &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=4YFYNUu_sqE\">Memories Like Fingerprints<\/a>&#8221; after a Pearl Jam lyric.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Though I freely admitted above I took a little bit of inspiration from <em><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.timelypersuasion.com\/blog\/?tag=quantum-leap\" data-type=\"post_tag\" data-id=\"5\">Quantum Leap<\/a><\/em> here, for the record the &#8220;two leaper&#8221; scenario was coincidental. Same earrings, same blouse, but her face and hair and body changed in the blink of an eye. No metamorphosis, no flash of light, no special effects. A different person just like that. \u201c\u2014whoa!\u201d<\/em> <sup>(With a great minds hat tip to Addison &amp; Ben &amp; Drew Lindo)<\/sup><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The <em>Timely Persuasion <\/em>narrator would&#8217;ve found a way to put <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=QPmAO4xpQcE\">rhinoceros-shaped earrings in her ears<\/a>,  but &#8220;Shuggie&#8221; doesn&#8217;t feel like a Local Boy song to me.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Rehearsed at worst, cursed to thirst, less is more and last things first.<\/em> &lt;&#8211; A lyric so bad it was cut for a reason.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=xA-O0KnlIv4\">Whoa, whoa, whoa!<\/a><\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>&#8220;Nanny. I&#8217;ll have to remember that&#8221; is something you should remember too.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>An earlier draft had the time trip taking them to the narrator&#8217;s first date with the redhead from <em>Timely Persuasion<\/em>, but I thought it was too jarring to have Local Boy mind merge with his son. For a while I planned to move that variant to a later chapter after he eased into the new blink\/leap dynamic, but ended up reworking a different riff on it into another sequel story.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>\u201cWhat is it.\u201d My wife asked the question in the form of a statement.<\/em> &lt;&#8211; These bits are me playfully making fun of my past self&#8217;s sixteen year old ebook punctuation mistake<sup data-fn=\"c57e4264-77f1-4388-8835-f0ca3e06262a\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#c57e4264-77f1-4388-8835-f0ca3e06262a\" id=\"c57e4264-77f1-4388-8835-f0ca3e06262a-link\">3<\/a><\/sup> while also cooly retconning it into the plot. &#8211;> <em>\u201cA robber?\u201d Daphne used the correct punctuation.<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/review\/show\/7055265874\">recent review<\/a> (the first!) said &#8220;Profanity is tolerable.&#8221; Good thing I cut off Local Boy&#8217;s f-bomb here after letting it fly in the original TP scene. <em>AWAB, etc<\/em> indeed!<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Local Boy tries to have this &#8220;aw, shucks&#8221; demeanor and downplays his intelligence at times, but a line like \u201cGravity teamed with elasticity to flop the dog back on the dirt&#8221; hints he&#8217;s a brighter bulb than he lets on.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Kinda wish these new verses of &#8220;If Only&#8221; went <em>wun-wundrin&#8217; why<\/em> for another hidden &#8220;Won One&#8221; namedrop.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>FOOTNOTES<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-footnotes\"><li id=\"0e8186c8-3227-440e-bc95-fa3c7525db28\">Since I&#8217;ve developed a new obsession with WordPress footnotes, I&#8217;ll throw one more clue down here. Who&#8217;s to say <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.timelypersuasion.com\/blog\/?p=3089\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"3089\">back at Kurt Cobain&#8217;s house<\/a> Local Boy &amp; Nelson didn&#8217;t essentially possess the bodies of <a href=\"https:\/\/vimeo.com\/931658951\">Tom Grant &amp; Dylan Carlson<\/a>? <a href=\"#0e8186c8-3227-440e-bc95-fa3c7525db28-link\" aria-label=\"Jump to footnote reference 1\">\u21a9\ufe0e<\/a><\/li><li id=\"8564710f-a8e3-4e8c-9821-e54b293f716f\">Speaking of keeping things front of mind &amp; of body possession in the previous footnote, last chapter I promised the final clue to how Nelson was giving the stolen songs to his parents would be coming soon.
