{"id":2381,"date":"2021-10-03T10:20:15","date_gmt":"2021-10-03T15:20:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.timelypersuasion.com\/blog\/?p=2381"},"modified":"2021-11-22T12:58:05","modified_gmt":"2021-11-22T18:58:05","slug":"lx-commentary-15-so-well","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.timelypersuasion.com\/blog\/lx-commentary-15-so-well\/","title":{"rendered":"LX Commentary #15: So Well"},"content":{"rendered":"\r\n<p>The setup for this chapter came to me with the clarity of a message from my future self: Benji &amp; L, on a date at a hardware store, chaperoned by Frank, coveting an unidentified handcrafted object for mysterious reasons.<\/p>\r\n<p><em>&#8220;You&#8217;ve got it made, because you&#8217;re made so well.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\r\n<p>Early on the hardware store was called &#8220;Ellum &amp; Op&#8221;\u2014a dumb play on LMNOP and a Jon Mack in-joke. But with no real Benji Hughes connection I dropped it, intending to leave the store unnamed. (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ballerhardware.com\/about-us\">Baller Hardware<\/a> in Los Feliz was my inspiration, but displaying a hammer in a locked case on a velvet pedestal is based on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagomag.com\/Chicago-Magazine\/August-2018\/Hammacher-Schlemmer\/\">original Hammacher &amp; Co store<\/a> of the mid 1800s.)<br \/><br \/>During the final leadup to release day I was talking to Benji about something completely unrelated (and, to be honest, unremembered) when our conversation thread arrived at the phrases &#8220;will occur&#8221; and &#8220;did occur.&#8221;<br \/><br \/>Benji stopped and said &#8220;That sounds like a hardware store. By this point Frank was already narrating the flashback with a twist that follows. <em>Gee wilicurs!\u00a0<\/em>I realized I could use both names and still have it make sense.<br \/><br \/>Sometimes what will occur did occur&#8230;and shall occur again when your future self reminds you.<br \/><br \/>Other tidbits:<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>&#8220;I bet it was a custom order&#8221; = &#8220;You got it made&#8230;&#8221; (sic)<\/li>\r\n<li>&#8220;Hand forged by an expert with a penchant for perfection&#8221; = &#8220;&#8230;because you&#8217;re made so well.&#8221;<\/li>\r\n<li>&#8220;How long has it been here, locked up in this case?&#8221; is a paraphrasing of the <em>LILILIL<\/em> line &#8220;How long have I been here, locked up in this cage?&#8221; (That&#8217;s also why the next line of narration is &#8220;Was she being literal or allegorical?&#8221;)<\/li>\r\n<li>&#8220;She eyed both ends of the aisle to make sure they were alone&#8221; = &#8220;&#8216;Cause I like it so much better when we&#8217;re alone.&#8221;<\/li>\r\n<li>The <em>Woot! He reads <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rambles_in_Germany_and_Italy\">a different Mary Shelley book<\/a>\u00a0here as a nod to his origins plus a more legitimate in-world reason for his name\/appearance vs. just playing it for laughs.<\/li>\r\n<li>&#8220;Relativity gets unbound when the future is behind you and the past is what you can see&#8221; mashes up <em>LILILIL <\/em>with <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Prometheus_Unbound_(Shelley)\">Mary&#8217;s husband Percy Shelley<\/a>.<\/li>\r\n<li>&#8220;All seven digits&#8221; is the punchline to an old joke, referenced here for Nate Pepper&#8217;s benefit.<\/li>\r\n<li>\r\n<figure id=\"attachment_2401\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2401\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cargocollective.com\/mkf\/LILILIL\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2401\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blog.timelypersuasion.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/LILILIL-Game-2.jpg?resize=300%2C232&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"232\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blog.timelypersuasion.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/LILILIL-Game-2.jpg?resize=300%2C232&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blog.timelypersuasion.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/LILILIL-Game-2.jpg?resize=517%2C400&amp;ssl=1 517w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blog.timelypersuasion.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/LILILIL-Game-2.jpg?resize=388%2C300&amp;ssl=1 388w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blog.timelypersuasion.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/LILILIL-Game-2.jpg?w=750&amp;ssl=1 750w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2401\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Renderings of chocolate cake from an abandoned <em>LILILIL<\/em> video game by <a href=\"https:\/\/cargocollective.com\/mkf\/LILILIL\">Maxim Kolbowski-Frampton<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\r\nThe chapter ending segue underwent many iterations. Originally Frank wrote a letter to Evilon in the style of Victor&#8217;s letter to Elizabeth in <em>Frankenstein<\/em>. Later it became a cryptic note to the mysterious Space People from <em>LILILIL.\u00a0<\/em>Eventually I figured out that the Halloween party flashback needed to be Frank-centric to work effectively, leading to the final phone call version.
