Benji went out with a bang in week #4. An impromptu cover of "Summer of 69" was the lead in to "The Mummy." "You Stood Me Up" was even better than it was in week 2, and he added "I Went With Some Friends To See The Flaming Lips" and "Tight Tee Shirt" to the set as well. Non-album tracks included "Time Machine" (!!!) and "I Hate When Pretty Ladies Die."

Later on we got a random bit of "Dream On" by Aerosmith, an explanation of the sequel to "Against All Odds" ("...cause you coming back to me, is against more odds, it's a chance I've got to take again..."), and a lyrically flawless solo acoustic song that started off "Why is Christian music the worst music I've ever heard?"

Towards the end of the show he asked the audience if they wanted to hear "All You've Got To Do Is Fall in Love" or "So Much Better." We wanted both, which led to the experimental playing of both songs simultaneously -- complete with overlapping "with me" lyrics.

Thanks to Benji for an extreme July. I miss you already.

Week #3 upped the star power of the special guests with Jenny Lewis (for a great cover of "Up Where We Belong" by Joe Cocker & Jennifer Warnes), Morgan Naylor (acoustic guitar duets of "Don't You Call Me Sweetheart, Sweetheart" and "The Grand Adventure of Living"), M'shell Ndegeocello (playing bass on the Jenny Lewis song and a couple of instrumental jams). Jon Brion also guested on guitar for the whole show.

Aside from the guests covers at the end the setlist was more similar to week one, but with a slightly more chill vibe to the arrangements.

As Benji said there's only one week left, unless they hold them over for lunch shows on Tuesdays...

Week 2 had a similar first half but a vastly different second half. Quick rundown:

-Benji still wore the cape, but opted to go shirtless..

-He brought a dog named Bear on stage who sat there for the entire show

-Some of the arrangements were a little different on a few songs, especially the keyboard bits.

-They played "The Mummy" and "You Stood Me Up," both of which were on my aforementioned wishlist and sounded great. The solo at the end of Mummy rocked, and "You Stood Me Up" was more subdued than on the record but a great live tune

-Two solo piano songs this time, "Taxi" and something else I hadn't heard before.

-Added "Desperados Under The Eaves" to the Zevon covers list, with Jackson Browne on piano. I've always loved the line "If California slides into the ocean, like the mystics and statistics say it will."

-Jackson and Jonathan Wilson played a 3 song set without Benji towards the end. Midway through song 3 the drummer ran across the rear of the stage from left to right while Benji chased her with extended arms. Very Scooby-Doo!

-Encore was "Where Do Old Lovers Go?"

Hey,
I found your site while looking for book club questions for Replay. It is my favorite book (I too read it yearly!) and I finally got my book club to agree to read it.
I was wondering if you happen to have the old hardback book club copy and might be willing to tell me what the questions are?
I know I could come up with my own but I'm interested in what is already in there.
If not thats ok too. Still an awesome blog :)
